Marlins and Mets to Play Puerto Rico

It’s Official! Major League Baseball (MLB) is returning to Puerto Rico, with the announcement today that the Florida Marlins and New York Mets will be playing their June 28 – 30 games in Puerto Rico at the Hiram Bithorn Stadium, San Juan.

The news probably comes as no surprise to baseball fans, as the rumors of the switch have been circulating for months. But as it is now official, fans here in Puerto Rico can now look forward to watching Major League Baseball for the first time since the 2003-04 seasons when Puerto Rico played host to the Montreal Expos.

carlos beltran new york metsPuerto Rico has also hosted the World Baseball Classic in 2006 and 2009 and both teams can expect some rousing support over the upcoming 3 game series with several players on both teams being natives of Puerto Rico or played winter baseball here on the island.

Currently the Florida Marlins’ 40-man roster includes Jorge Jimenez is from Puerto Rico and Pitcher Rick VandenHurk who played winter baseball in Puerto Rico.

The New York Mets roaster includes Carlos Beltran, Omir Santos, Pedro Feliciano, Angel Pagan and Alex Cora from Puerto Rico

Tickets will go on sale at 10am (EST), Saturday March 20, 2010 and will be available at MLB.com and Ticketpop.com
