1943, Columbus discovered Puerto Rico on November 19 (the island was already inhabited by the Taino tribe.Â
1508, Juan Ponce de Leon invaded the island and made slaves of the Taino people (though they did rebel). They made camp on the south shore of San Juan Bay, which would later move to what is now Old San Juan.
1539, the construction of El Morro was started.
1595, El Morro was attacked by the British led by Sir Francis Drake.
1898, the USA invaded Puerto Rico. The Treaty of Paris stated that Spain was to cede Puerto Rico to the USA.
1917, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Jones Law that granted Puerto Ricans American citizenship and were now eligible to serve in the American Armed Forces. Puerto Ricans have taken a major role in all of the USA military conflicts since that time.
1930, the population in Puerto Rico had grown to more than 1.5 million.
1928, Puerto Rico was hit by Hurricane San Felipe, in 1932 it was Hurricane San Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos was elected President of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party.
1940, Luis Munoz Marin formed the Popular Democratic Party.
1946, the Puerto Rico Independence Party was formed.
1946, Harry S. Truman appointed the first Puerto Rican governor, Jesus T. Pineiro.
1947, the US Congress passed a bill which established that Puerto Ricans could vote every 4 years for governor of the island.
1948, Munoz Marin (Popular Democratic Party ) became the first democratically elected governor
1967, the people of Puerto Rico voted to be a Commonwealth of the USA.
Today, Puerto Rico remains a commonwealth and it’s current governor is AnÃbal Acevedo Vila (Popular Democratic Party).
