Between August 11 to 17, 2008, the Club Nautico de San Juan will be holding the 55th San Juan International Billfish Tournament.
The tournament attracts big game anglers from around the world for 4 days of intense competition fishing off the coast of Puerto Rico. The San Juan International Billfish Tournament follows the IGFA conservation procedures and is a tag and release competition using 50lb Tournament Test line.
The coasts off San Juan are recognized for the abundance of Blue Marlin with the high season being in the months of July, August September. The “Billfish Pass†or “Blue Marlin Alley” which is a natural trench just off the coast of San Juan is a popular spot for catching Blue Marlin.
Highlights from previous tournaments include:
1996 – 666 lb Blue Marlin was caught by a first time angler
1997 – 895.5lb Blue Marlin
1998 – 607.5lb Blue Marlin
2000 – 1,086 lb Blue Marlin was caught just 5 miles off the coast of San Juan
The preliminary schedule is:
Mon / Tues Aug 11/12 – Angler’s Registration
Weds Aug 13 – 1st fishing day
Thurs Aug 14 – 2nd fishing day
Fri Aug 15 – Rest day
Sat Aug 16 – 3rd fishing day
Sun Aug 17 – final fishing day with awards banquet in the evening.
