United States Coast Guard Cutter Eagle Visiting Old San Juan

The United States Coast Guard Cutter Eagle will be arriving in San Juan tomorrow May 7. It will dock at Pier 1, Old San Juan until May 10. While in port the USCGC Eagle will be open to the public for a closer look at life on board “America’s Tall Ship”.

The USCGC Eagle will be open to the public on:

Friday, May 7 from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Saturday, May 8 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Sunday, May 9 from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Quick Facts:

  • Built in 1936 by the Blohm and Voss Shipyard in Hamburg and named Horst Wessel
  • Originally operated by Nazi Germany to train cadets for the German Navy
  • United States took possession after World War II and gave it the name Eagle
  • Used by United States Coast Guard Academy and candidates from the Officer Candidate School
  • Typically has 12 officers, 68 crew, and up to 150 cadets
  • Under full sail can reach speeds of 17 knots
  • Length 295ft, 6 miles of running rigging and approximately 22,300square feet of sail
  • 1,000 horsepower diesel engine with a range of 5,450nautical miles under diesel power
