On July 4, 2018 some 287 days or 9 months, 14 days after Hurricane Maria made landfall, the El Yunque National Forest reopened the Yokahú Tower. The re-opening of Yokahú Tower is a major step in the recovery of El Yunque after the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria.
Yokahú Tower is one of two towers in El Yunque and the first and easiest tower to see when visiting the forest. The Mount Britton Tower (currently closed) is the second tower. Yokahú Tower construction began in 1962 and was completed in 1963.
The tower is located along RT 191 at an elevation of 1575ft and stands some 65 feet tall.
Take the spiral staircase (almost 100 steps) making sure of the small windows as you climb until you reach the top to enjoy the sweeping vistas of El Yunque and the coast towards Luquillo from the top.
Remember to check out the small gift shop at the entrance to the tower 🙂
A popular spot, the Yokahú Tower can become crowded, especially on weekends and holidays, so it is best to arrive early to to to avoid the tourist buses.
There is no charge for visiting the tower or for the car park.
